Work Experience
7/22/2013 to Present
Nuclear Mechanical Planner
(Modification/Maintenance/Welding)
Duke Energy
H.B. Robinson Unit 2
Hartsville, SC 29550
Responsibilities:
- Working closely with Design Engineering during development and implementation of Engineering Change (EC) Packages and Work Orders (WO)
- Provide information for schedule updates as needed
- Developing detailed work instructions using required procedures, specifications, and drawings
- Welding planning for all welded attachments; creating weld maps and weld data records to appropriately identify and document the installation and inspection of each weld
- Planning for Post Maintenance Testing
- Specify and order parts/materials as needed during EC and WO development and implementation; and work closely with Procurement Engineering and warehouse storekeepers to expedite material delivery and issuance
Notable Achievement:
Developed a new method for Designing Weld Maps utilizing Microsoft Excel and SnagIt. Designed a Weld Map Catalog which contains different components ie; piping, valves, fittings etc. (small bore and large bore) most commonly used when designing welds. This process has streamlined Weld Planning to maximize efficiency and provides the Welders with an accurate display of what the completed fabrication should look like to eliminate the confusion associated with welders trying to "interpret" what the Weld Map is calling for them to build. Additionally, developed a process to document the research that is associated with validating plant materials for safety related welds based on OE of poor research for material validation when designing welds. Examples of these documents are available (Click Work Examples).

Also Shared Resource to
H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant
Darlington, SC
Current Work Scope:
Supporting CR3 EPU Phase 3 preparations for R17. This phase of planning requires performing numerous Field Walkdowns to breakdown the removal/installation processes and to take accurate field dimensions of affected system piping and associated hangers. Additionally, I have been working closely with all engineering departments to solidify the EC package details and I have been developing and planning detailed Work Instructions for Modification Engineering Changes. Supporting station maintenance planning activities as necessary.
Shared Resource (H.B. Robinson)
4KV Recovery Project Planner
Work Scope:
For the period of 5-1-2010 through 7-9-2010, I accepted an assignment to travel from CR3 to Progress Energy’s H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant in Darlington, South Carolina to support their outage under the supervision of RNP Planning Supervisor Steve Moore. SGT (the Steam Generating Team) was the contractor performing the repairs and developing the work instructions. In this position, I acted as the Progress Energy Planner to carry out all administrative functions within PassPort which included the following:
- Worked closely with SGT Management, SGT Engineering and SGT Scheduling Departments as well as Progress Energy Management, PE Engineering, and PE Scheduling, and PE Operations departments
- Generated Work Order tasks for tracking SGT’s work performance, to appropriately charge materials and resources, and to allow the initiation and tracking of equipment clearances
- Searched the equipment database and allocated materials as necessary
- Planned Work Order tasks for RNP Scaffold builders, Painters, Insulators, Electricians, or Instrument & Component technicians to perform support work as needed
- Planned detailed work instructions for Operations, and RNP Testing group with plant resource support to satisfy Post Modification Testing requirements for all work performed
- Worked diligently to stay ahead of SGT’s field engineers/work package writers so when their work packages became approved for use, it could be attached to the appropriate PassPort WO task, approved, printed, and administrative Work Start Permission Obtained
I was assigned to this project because of my familiarity with the Work Management/Project Controls process established between SGT and Progress Energy for the CR3 Containment Repair Project. The process needed to be incorporated at H.B. Robinson to provide a consistent work flow during the 4KV Recovery Project. When I arrived at Robinson, no one was aware of the process or how it was going to work. To aid in the widespread communication of the process and associated roles and responsibilities, I created documents to explain the processes, roles and responsibilities, and expectations. These documents are available below:
EPU Phase 2 Work Scope:
Assisted in the total planning effort for Phase 2 of the three phase Extended Power Uprate (EPU) project. The ultimate goal of EPU is to upgrade the plant to generate 1080MW/e. The scope of Phase 2 EPU included the replacement of large components, and upgrades to the existing plant equipment listed below to meet EPU final design requirements:
- Moisture Separator Reheaters
- Low Pressure Feedwater Heaters
- Secondary Cooling Pumps and Motors
- Miscellaneous Heater Drain Valve replacements
- Turbine by-pass valve and actuator replacement
- Secondary Cooling Pump by-pass piping system upgrade
- Auxiliary Steam By-pass line to allow turbine roll-up and generator ventilation testing using steam from fossil units while the reactor is down-powered
Responsibilities:
- Working closely with Design Engineering during development and implementation of Engineering Change (EC) Packages and Work Orders (WO)
- Provide information for schedule updates as needed
- Developing detailed work instructions using required procedures, specifications, and drawings
- Welding Planning for all welded attachments (B31.1 piping and AWS D1.1 structural); reference Corporate Welding Manual to determine the requirements for pre-heat, interpass temperature, and post weld heat treatment, create weld maps and weld data records to appropriately identify and document the installation and inspection of each weld. Coordinate with Welding Engineers to ensure documentation of appropriate inspection criteria per weld. SEE WELD PLANNING EXAMPLES: Example 1 Example 2 Example 3
- Work closely with Quality Assurance and QC inspectors to ensure that applicable Hold Points and inspections are documented appropriately within the work package prior to work package approval.
- Planning for Post Maintenance Testing; coordinate with test engineers to develop test instructions for new equipment or troubleshooting existing equipment. Allocate test equipment as necessary.
- Reviewing Work Orders to verify completeness and accuracy prior to closure and processing through Document Control
- Specify and order parts/materials as needed during EC and WO development and implementation; and work closely with Procurement Engineering and warehouse storekeepers to expedite material delivery and issuance
- Performing walk-downs in any type of environment or conditions to re-evaluate the process in which work is to be performed, to ensure that proper place-keeping is enforced during implementation, to take observations as work progresses, and to promote a Safety Conscious Work Environment
Notable Achievements:
R16 Outage Planning Guidance
Created an interactive desktop procedure utilizing screenshots and hyperlinks to be shared with our EPU Project Planning department during the outage to better coordinate and enforce alignment between night-shift and day-shift work processes. This document ensured that our entire department modified Work Orders in a consistent manner. I included hyperlinks to the appropriate planning documents and tools to improve work performance. This saved a lot of outage time collectively, and improved the quality of our Work Orders. A copy of this document is available for viewing by clicking the R16 OUTAGE PLANNING GUIDANCE link below:
Designed New Relocation Configuration
Created a conceptual design to send to Sulzer Pumps Project Management to expedite their engineering design, and to ensure that the appropriate equipment data was being used for calculations. After performing research on placement, gathering measurements and finding the vendor data for each component, I had a 3D model drafted by our Designer. The documentation including the 3D models are located below:
